As Hurricane Sandy sweeps the East Coast, businesses, schools and entire cities are being closed in its path, some  devastated in its wake. As of Tuesday, the storm is poised to move through Pennsylvania, with its strongest impact in the East of the state.

Governor Tom Corbett has declared a state of emergency. Already, there are more than 30,000 households in Pennsylvania without power.

Fourteen of the 20 Penn State campuses across the system have been closed for either Monday or Tuesday. University Park cancelled all activities after 1:10 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Each of the other campuses are to make case-by-case decisions according to their local conditions.
“By all accounts, this storm system has the potential to be one of the strongest the region has seen in years,” said Penn State president Rodney Erickson. “All members of the University community should put their personal safety first.”

In Erie, flooding has begun. The shores of Presque Isle are  rising and engulfing sidewalks and beaches. The federal courthouse will be closed from Monday at 4 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

It has been advised that students keep watch on the Penn State website, www.psu.edu for updates on class cancellations. Students can also sign up for text messages from the college by visiting http://live.psu.edu/psutxt.
