This week’s athlete of the week has shown impressive dedication to her sport and her team.

Senior women’s volleyball player Mary Sperry helped the team earn the  number one seed at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships next weekend. She had 13 kills and 24 digs in a win over Pitt-Bradford this past Tuesday.

Sperry got her start playing volleyball in sixth grade and played all the way through her high school career. She also played basketball and softball in high school but she decided to stick with volleyball in college.

”Volleyball was always my favorite sport and playing it in college was something that I had always wanted to do,” Sperry said. This will be her tenth year as a volleyball player.

Sperry is a biology major who is minoring in math. After graduation, she plans on attending graduate school to get her masters in bio mathematics.

Sperry believes this year the women’s volleyball team “has turned the corner for a program that hasn’t been playing up to its past reputation.”

The women’s volleyball team has had an excellent season and Sperry believes that it’s because of all the hard work that everyone put into the season.

“We have worked hard this year and no one expected us to be here entering the AMCC as the No. 1 seed with a 9-0 record”.

This is something that has yet to happen in the four years that Sperry has played here. “I am so ecstatic about this year and I want to end it on a big note.”

Head coach Phil Pisano is impressed with Sperry’s performance. “This year she has been playing terrific defense as well as leading the team in attacking. She’s an extremely hard worker and intense competitor who is very motivated to help our team succeed.”

Assistant coach Jordan Varee also thinks highly of Mary. “She is a great all-around player and will do just about anything that is asked of her. Being one of two seniors, she has been asked to carry a pretty heavy load this year and has lived up to that task throughout the regular season.”

The women’s volleyball team will host the AMCC conference tournament this weekend to try and hold on to their No. 1 seed. Varee says, “it could possibly be anyone’s tournament, but we will definitely be ready for the challenge,” Varee says.
