There is winning an event, and then there is dominating an event. The men’s swimming and diving team did the latter, engineering a strong effort to win the AMCC Championships with a total of 402 points. The second place team, Pitt-Bradford, scored 167 points. The team led each day of the championships on their way to winning. Sophomore Lucas Kachurick, who won the three-meter and one-meter diving competitions, led the divers. Kachurick was awarded the title of Longnecker Invitational Diver, the diver of the year award, which he has won twice. Kachurick’s one-meter score proved to qualify him for NCAA’s, and his score in the preliminaries set an AMCC open and meet record. Kachurick was also named AMCC Athlete of the Week. Kachurick was not the only part of the swimming and diving team to receive an award. For the swimmers, freshman Dan Simon set an AMCC open record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.03. Freshman Javier Solivan broke the AMCC open record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:57.04. Solivan led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 butterfly, with junior Clay Altemose timing in at 1:57.37 and freshman Ryan Mitcheltree finishing with a time of 1:58.34. The Behrend Lions also dominated the 1650 free, as junior Brian Mong led the Lions and the AMCC with a time of 17:23.75. Freshman Josh Schwab placed second with a time of 17:45.70. In the 100 free, Sophomore Peter Blazak led the way for Behrend with a time of 48.39. Junior Everett Sargent finished just behind him with a time of 48.75, while junior Andrew Opalewski finished in third. The team ended the AMCC’s in the same record-breaking fashion that they showed during the event. The 400 free relay closed the meet, and the competitors broke the AMCC open, AMCC meet and team record with a time of 3:08.81. |
